Tired of large vet bills, endless rounds
of medications that just don’t seem to work? I know I was. I
never thought that there was any alternative to traditional
veterinary medicine until a homeopathic vet donated her
services to our Doberman Rescue shelter in
New Hampshire
. She seemed to work miracles on some of our more hopeless
cases with acupuncture, chiropractic care and reiki massages,
so I wondered if she could help my Shania J.
Randy and I adopted
Shania J two years ago form Doberman Rescue Unlimited, a rescue
group that places more than 300 unwanted Dobermans a year in
loving homes. Shania J came to DRU from a divorce- the couple
sold their home and each moved into apts. that would not allow
pets. Shania J was a nervous, frazzled mess when we brought
her home. All of her hair had fallen out and she chewed the
pads of her feet until they were bleeding and she was lame. We
tried everything - prednisone, steroids, puppy downers,
special allergy dog food, blood tests for allergies, and
scratch test for yeast. Finally
our vet said “I don’t know why she chews her feet or why
her hair is falling out-maybe she’s just nervous.” We had
to leave her during the day with one of those cones on her
head so she wouldn’t gnaw at her feet and leave bloody
tracks all over the house and on the furniture- it was
heartbreaking.
As a last resort, I contacted Dr. Karen
Komisar in
Danvers
. She is a DVM and she also is a homeopathic vet. Homeopathy
deals more with why the symptoms occur and correcting it,
instead of modern medicine which tends to just make the
symptoms more tolerable. Homeopathy uses natural remedies and
depends on the body’s own ability to heal itself. |
| At the first session, Dr.
Komisar “interviewed” Shania J and thought that she
might have had a series of severe stress related incidents
that were suppressing her body’s auto immune system and
its natural ability to fight off the normal bacteria and
funguses on the dog’s feet and between their toes. She
gave Shania J a series of remedies and switched her from
her dry kibbles to a raw diet (there is a lot of info on
the web for raw diet www.switchingtoraw.com
or BARF (Bones and Raw Food www.barfworld.com).
Over a period of months, her hair has grown in and she has
stopped chewing her feet (now she loves to chew compressed
rawhide bones or her stuffed squeaky toys). Once a picky
eater, she now demands her dinner of raw hamburger, brown
rice, spinach, pumpkin and yogurt.
It may not be the answer for every pet owner, but if
you have a problematic dog or cat and are tired of taking
them to the vet for the same problem again and again,
consider homeopathy. For more details of Shania J's
treatments or veterinary homeopathy, feel free to contact
