PRV Fall
Yard Sale and Junk Pickup
|
|
Interested in posting to the web but don't want
to build a website? Like writing about anything and
everything? Blogging could be your vehicle.
This is one of the hottest terms on the marketing front right
now. Below is a
description from an authority on the subject. One way to do it
is with TypePad.
"Blogging has been around for a long
time. In fact, the very first websites were what we consider
today to be "blogs." Blog, short for "weblog,"
is an Internet-based tool for delivering immediate
information." More..
|
Interested in participating in a
fall yard sale? Details to be found on our double
header weekend page! The board scheduled a
special junk pick-up after the last yard sale. This worked out
very well as evidenced by the amount of 'stuff' that was left
by the watershed area. This will be repeated on September 11.
All welcome to empty their basements or garages free of
charge. No oil, paint, TVs, computers or refrigerators. Email Laurie through board@paulreverevillage.com
with any questions.

Brian Burns, our PRVA Treasurer, offers more
info about our woods. " Here
is a link referencing those trails. MTBR is a mountain
bike website with trail descriptions for every place you can
think of. The woods out back are referred to as Rayburn which
is a street off Carousel House Rd. where some of the
trails connect and where a lot of the mountain bikers
enter the trail system. The
guy who built most of the trails lives right there too."

Sail Close
to the Wind
|
|
The rush to buy condominiums is hardly a passing fancy,
according to a panel of experts at a multifamily housing
conference in San Francisco earlier this summer.
|
The physics of sailing offer two key lessons
for effective communication.
First, consider the physics of force. Sailing
is essentially the balance of four forces.
Second, consider the wind. If you try to sail
upwind - directly against the wind - you won't go anywhere.
What do these have to do with communication? Read

A Washington, D.C.-based sales and marketing consultant, said
that of all the factors "energizing" the trend, only
one -- mortgage rates -- has the "potential for
change." But even higher loan costs are not likely to
stop the trend, he said

| Search engines love blogs and
quickly pull blog pages into high rankings, in fact much faster than
website listings. Although more sophisticated blogs appear to be similar
in style and content to rich Web sites (incorporating archives,
"About Us" pages, "Contact Us" pages, photos, links
to Web sites), most blogs follow a particular format or footprint.
Information is in reverse chronological order and postings are dated and
often time-stamped, reinforcing the immediacy of the content. Users can
easily continue where they left off from past visits and, since the
freshest content is always at the top of the page, there's no scanning
to determine the latest information. The most popular blogs are updated
frequently, some several times daily, with posts ranging in length from
a sentence or two to several paragraphs. And always lots of relevant
links.
In addition, most blogs use a technology called RSS (it's all in the
backend so you still don't need to know how to code!). RSS allows the
capture of information via a "reader" or "scraper"
which downloads updates from subscribed blogs into your person blog
feed. Huge Benefit: NEVER any spam! Also, keep in mind, since most blog
posts are brief, it's an easy and fast read. (I've subscribed to 51
blogs and the list keeps growing!) Bloglines is a free a service. http://www.bloglines.com/
Value of Biz Blogs
The value of blogs for the business community lies in their
refreshing cut-to-the-chase ability to create the type of association
that the Internet has promised, developing one-to-one relationships with
customers and prospects. When visitors read your business advice and
learn more about your products and services, they become emotionally
involved with your brand. Customers want to do business with the
providers they know. Blogs offer the ability to facilitate a meaningful
relationship and to encourage a dialogue with customers, an increased
interaction that equates to stronger brand identification and loyalty.
Great example of a biz blog from Dana VanDen Heuvel - Internet marketing
and sales technology from the trenches: http://www.danavan.net/weblog/index.html
Companies are using blogs for customer relationship development,
public and media relations, and brand development. Macromedia, a pioneer
in business-to-business blogs, uses the technology to update customers
on product development ( http://radio.weblogs.com/0106884).
Consulting or services sector blogs can reinforce the company's
leadership position. For example, Jupiter Research produces a series of
blogs written by its analysts, (complete with photos and bios) that
track issues affecting the industries that Jupiter monitors (weblogs.jupiterresearch.com).
Universities are using blogs helps to help with recruiting: http://www.southern.edu/?page=diaries/index.php.
I could go on and on....but instead, If anyone is interested in more
examples or wants additional information on biz blogging let me know (as
you might have guessed biz blogging has become my new passion). The
Internet/eCom SIG invited Biz Stone, author of "Blogs the Next
Killer App" to guest moderate a thread on blogs last summer. If
you'd like a copy a transcript of the thread I'd be happy to forward the
Word.doc. Please contact me off list - toby@bloombergmarketing.com
Bottomline...blogs are still under the radar screen for many business
people but moving on up quickly as a marketing communication/public
relations/branding/customer relationship strategy/sales strategies!

Sail close to the wind. The physics of sailing offers two key lessons
for effective communication.
First, consider the physics of forces. Sailing is essentially the
balance of four forces. Horizontally, the force of the sails balances
out the force of the boat's keel and hull. Vertically, the force of the
boat's weight balances out the force of its buoyancy. If one force is
greater than the opposing force, then you can't sail the boat. Effective
communication needs to be a balance of forces as well - the force of
speaking and the force of listening. If one person does all the talking
and the other does all the listening, then you can't sail the boat!
Second, consider the wind. If you try to sail upwind - directly
against the wind - you won't go anywhere. If you try to sail downwind -
directly with the wind - you'll achieve success, but you'll be limited,
as you can never go faster than the speed of the wind. The best way to
sail is "close to the wind", typically at 45%. Together, the
sails and the wind generate lift and speed, faster than either could do
alone. It's much the same with communication. Aggressive interaction,
where you're constantly battling for your point of view, will meet with
resistance, and eventually end up going nowhere. Passive interaction,
where you simply drift along, may get you there, but never at full
potential. Assertive communication, sailing close to the wind by working
with the other person to achieve consensus and agreement, will generate
lift and speed. To communicate effectively, listen as much as you speak,
and sail close to the wind!
